Jodhpur Stampede, Jodhpur News
JODHPUR: In one of worst tragedies in Rajasthan, 200 people are dead, mostly men, and several injured in a stampede that took place when thousands of devotees gathered at a 15th century temple in Jodhpur on the occasion of Navaratri festival on Tuesday.
It is feared that the toll may cross 200.
The worshippers had gathered at the Chamunda Devi Temple situated on a hill top in the precincts of Mehrangarh Fort when the tragedy struck at around 5.30 am after some devotees slipped on a slope causing the stampede.
The injured are being treated in various hospitals, Rajasthan’s Principal Secretary (Home) S N Thanvi said. “As some devotees slipped on the slope on the temple path, others gathered there started falling on each other causing the stampede. A majority of those killed died due to suffocation as a result of the stampede,” he said in Jaipur.
According to reports, there is shortage of oxygen in hospitals.
Director General of Police (DGP), Rajasthan, K S Bains, however, said that nearly 100 people were injured in the incident.
Officials said most of the dead were men as the stampede took place in the separate queue for males for going to the temple.
About 15 to 20 people were killed at the stop and the others succumbed to their injuries in Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Mathura Das Hospital and Sun City Hospital, among others, in Jodhpur.
The dead include a large number of young people, they said.
The devotees in large numbers, including women, had gathered at the temple from early this morning on the occasion of Navaratri festival.

UK arm not into subprime credit: ICICI
The country’s largest private lender, ICICI Bank, On Monday said that 98 per cent of its UK arm’s non-India investment book is rated investment grade and above. The bank’s share on Monday fell to a two-year low on the domestic bourses even while other front-line lenders including HDFC Bank and the State Bank of India were trading over 30 per cent above their yearly lows.
ICICI Bank said that its UK subsidiary, which was in the news a few days ago over concerns about its investments in the instruments of the bankrupt Lehman Brothers, has no exposure to the US subprime credit. The subsidiary’s non-India investment book has been estimated at $3.5 billion, and about 89 per cent of those investments are rated A- and above by Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch.
“Only about 18 per cent of ICICI Bank UK PLC’s non-India investment book has exposure to the US. The bank has a total balance sheet size of $8.5 billion and has zero non-performing loans on the balance portfolio of $3.9 biilion,” an official statement by ICICI Bank said.
A panic-selling in the counter saw the ICICI scrip drop 12.11 per cent to close at Rs 493.90 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The shares touched an intra-day low of Rs 483 and have lost nearly 60 per cent of its value over the past eight months.
According to market analysts, apart from confusion over the bank’s exposure to the US and European markets, high holding of foreign funds was taking a toll on the share price.

Citigroup Inc., the biggest U.S. bank by assets, will acquire banking operations of Wachovia Corp. for about $2.16 billion after shares of the North Carolina lender collapsed under the weight of overdue mortgages.
The all-stock deal equals about $1 a share for the Charlotte-based bank, ranked sixth by assets in the U.S. All depositors will be protected, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which helped broker the takeover by Citigroup. The New York-based bank plans to cut its own dividend in half and raise $10 billion in capital as it takes on Wachovia’s senior and subordinated debt.
Wachovia is the latest casualty of a financial crisis that drove Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Washington Mutual Inc. into bankruptcy and led to the hastily arranged rescues of Merrill Lynch & Co. and Bear Stearns Cos. The purchase gives Citigroup about 3,300 branches and offices in 21 states. Wachovia will continue to own the A.G. Edwards Inc. brokerage and the Evergreen mutual-fund family.

Mahalaya – Mahishasura Mardini
While we don’t mind waking up to Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s baritone for several Mahalayas to come, is Mahishasura Mardini never to see new voices?
Before you picked up today’s paper, you have probably experienced the magic— some rousing Sanskrit recitation, music and a dash of acoustic melodrama — thanks to the reverberating baritone of Birendra Krishna Bhadra. It goes without saying that this show at All India Radio, is what whole of Bengal rises to in the chilly predawn hours of 4 am, to be precise, on the Mahalaya.
Since the early 1930s, Mahalaya has become synonymous with Mahishasura Mardini recited by orator Birendra Krishna Bhadra. But in the Mahalaya morn of 1976, Bengal woke up to what can be called a jolt. “AIR decided to experiment and planned a special show. Uttam Kumar, was roped in to do the chandi path for us. He obliged, but the response we got was far from favourable,” says Ratna Sen, radio presenter with AIR.
