Chunnel fire set to bring days of traffic misery

The M20 could be turned into a giant lorry park tonight to cope with the traffic backlog caused by the Channel Tunnel closure.

Eurotunnel suspended all services following after a “serious” fire broke out seven miles from the French entrance to the tunnel.

As a result police have warned they may have to use Operation Stack to cope with the freight traffic unable to cross the Channel.

This could stay in effect for several days until the damage to the tunnel can be repaired and reopened – and the traffic backlog cleared.

A fire alarm sounded in the north-running tunnel at around 2.55pm UK time this afternoon (Thursday).

The French fire brigade were already on site dealing with a fire on a freight shuttle travelling from Folkestone to Calais, so responded quickly.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said the shuttle was evacuated and 32 people taken into the service tunnel.

A train was dispatched from the French side to pick up the people from the service tunnel and take them back to Calais.

Kanye West was arrested at the Los Angeles International airport on Thursday after a scuffle with photographers and is expected to be charged with vandalism, an airport spokesman said.

West’s bodyguard also was taken into custody after grabbing a photographer’s camera and a television camera and smashing them to the ground, said celebrity Web site TMZ.com, whose cameraman was involved.

Los Angeles airport spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said both West, 31, and his bodyguard were in police custody and were expected to be booked on charges of felony vandalism later on Thursday. The bodyguard also faces a charge of battery.

Rodriguez said West was arrested about 8 a.m. (1500 GMT) outside the passenger security screening area.

Tsunami

Indonesia lifts tsunami alert after strong quake

Indonesia’s meteorology agency lifted a tsunami warning issued on Thursday after a strong undersea quake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit the eastern Moluccas islands.

There were no reports of damage or casualties after the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey put at a magnitude at 6.6 and depth of 93 km (58 miles).

USGS said the epicentre of the quake that struck at around 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) lay 290 km (180 miles) east of Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province.

Local residents at Ternate island around 120 km (75 miles) south of the epicentre told Reuters by telephone the quake was felt mildly and did not cause massive panic among the people.

“I felt it but it was not that big. Windows and mirrors shook but nothing is broken,” Wirdayanti, who works at a local hotel in Ternate, told Reuters.

Suharjono, the head of the earthquake department at the meteorology agency, told Reuters they had not received any reports of casualties or damage.

Southeast Asia’s biggest economy lies in an area of intense seismic activity.

Greatest American Dog Show

Greatest American Dog Winner – Travis and Presley

Wow – my favorites won the “Greatest American Dog” title – oh yes, and a $250,000 prize!

Travis, a handsome, charismatic guy, and his boxer, Presley, a 16-month-old pup, took home the grand dogbone prize tonight (pictured here).

It was a close call between the winners and Laurie and Andrew, the smartest, best behaved Maltese I – and the judges – have ever seen. But it seems the separation anxiety that Andrew had (yes, Laurie, he had that big time) was the deciding factor in the competition.

September 11 2001

On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, millions of Americans – and others around the world – were astonished, horrified, frightened, and grieved over a world that had seemingly changed in a matter of minutes. One moment, people were going about their day, the next moment the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been attacked and thousands of people had been killed, including those on Flight 93, which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

In many ways, the world did change that day, and some of those changes are hard to assess because they’re still unfolding. A British jury’s decision earlier this week regarding a subsequent plot to attack airliners brought home the impact of terrorist threats on air travel and the complexities it has introduced. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are additional examples of how 9/11 has touched people’s lives.

But there are other changes, too. One is the somewhat fractious unity that has developed as nations work together to resist terrorist threats. This unity has helped cool off some of the rhetoric about Iranian nuclear activities and has provided a unified response to the Russia-Georgia standoff. New opportunities to do good by working together are gradually being accepted more willingly by the US and other nations.

In a short article titled “Other ways than by war,” Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “The characters and lives of men determine the peace, prosperity, and life of nations” (“The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany,” p. 277). Each individual’s character and life are shaped by what he or she values. Those who embrace envy, suspicion, hatred, resentment, and lack of respect for others would divide humanity into haves and have-nots, into ethnic or religious rivals. This is what might be called the “fog of 9/11” – the motivation that leads to war, bloodshed, and terrorist attacks.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Blog has become a super duper hit

Bollywood super star Amitabh Bachchan’s blog has become a super duper hit. It was evident from the sheer number of responses that he gets from his readers on his blog, but now we have numbers to back it.

Amitabh Bachcan in the meantime has proved himself a good writer as well. His oratory was never in doubt. In fact he is such a forceful orator that he can put political oratory of the likes of Advani, Vajpayee and others as child like.

His writings are no less impressive. Mostly his postings on his blogs were written in a hurry, but he always makes it a point to write flawless English.
