‘Righteous Kill’ Review

With big guns Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on the screen, police thriller’s script isn’t up to its stars’ potential.

It seems an imposition on somebody’s part to ask Robert De Niro and Al Pacino to use their iconic power to prop up and inflate “Righteous Kill,” a tricked-up and often turgid police thriller. At least these two aging virtuosi of the Method don’t altogether submit to the temptation of mailing in their performances. And they seem comfortable enough in each other’s company on-screen to make you wish there were more scenes that allowed them to just kick back and riff. It’d be a lot more enjoyable than watching the movie strain for clarity — or cleverness. De Niro and Pacino play, respectively, Turk and Rooster, veteran New York Police Department detectives whose skills have stayed sharp while their fortitude has been worn down by decades of sordid criminal behavior. Once (though it’s not clear how long ago), Turk crossed the line by planting evidence on a child killer who’d been freed from custody by that handy-dandy leitmotif, the legal technicality. Turk’s gambit puts the scum back in the hole, but it springs open a growing impatience on his part with due process that leads him and his partner to some late-career snafus and botched arrests. Now there’s a serial killer on the loose in their precinct who leaves calling cards with doggerel. The victims are all criminals who somehow got away with murder, rape and other heinous activities. Turk and Rooster aren’t trusted by their superior (Brian Dennehy) to handle the case alone. So another, younger duo (John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg) is brought into the investigation. Through their eyes — and Rooster’s — it begins to look as though the killer could only be “one of their own,” i.e., a rogue cop. And when that child killer turns up dead after the courts have once again set him free, the suspicions become more — how to put this without spoiling things? — specific in their focus.

America’s Got Talent

America's Got Talent

America’s Got Talent gave us the first “Results Show” that we love, but they have been kind to us as they announce Top 10 and have kept it shorter than most of its kind does. Jerry Springer announced that the Top 10 will be set tonight and than ten acts will see their journey end this evening. Here at RTM, we have our favorites and it has been surprising how America has not really shocked us too much with who has been sent home. There is a lot to do in a short period of time, so lets get to it.

America's Got Talent

With the group stretched across the stage, the group cheered with Jerry, even though ten of the acts would be gone soon. Jerry chatted up the judges quickly and then got to it and saw the Tuesday performances recapped. Jerry called forth The Wright Kids and Zooperstars, sans their costumes for the first time, and we saw The Wright Kids, who rocked the place the other night, advance over the cartoon characters.

America's Got Talent

In a huge upset, one of the favorites of the judges between Neal E. Boyd and Queen Emily looked like they were being sent home, which had Sharon Osbourne’s jaw dropping in disbelief. OK…I was just fooling you because they did it to us to make us think it to be true. Jerry announced that the next act was “Both of them.”

Greatest American Dog Show

Greatest American Dog Winner – Travis and Presley

Wow – my favorites won the “Greatest American Dog” title – oh yes, and a $250,000 prize!

Travis, a handsome, charismatic guy, and his boxer, Presley, a 16-month-old pup, took home the grand dogbone prize tonight (pictured here).

It was a close call between the winners and Laurie and Andrew, the smartest, best behaved Maltese I – and the judges – have ever seen. But it seems the separation anxiety that Andrew had (yes, Laurie, he had that big time) was the deciding factor in the competition.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Blog has become a super duper hit

Bollywood super star Amitabh Bachchan’s blog has become a super duper hit. It was evident from the sheer number of responses that he gets from his readers on his blog, but now we have numbers to back it.

Amitabh Bachcan in the meantime has proved himself a good writer as well. His oratory was never in doubt. In fact he is such a forceful orator that he can put political oratory of the likes of Advani, Vajpayee and others as child like.

His writings are no less impressive. Mostly his postings on his blogs were written in a hurry, but he always makes it a point to write flawless English.

Father of JonBenet Ramsey says on Oprah that he forgives the media

John Ramsey says he has forgiven the news media for the “cyberspace lynching” he and his wife endured until prosecutors cleared them in the 1996 killing of their six-year-old daughter, JonBenet.
Ramsey appeared on an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” broadcast Wednesday.
He said he considers new DNA tests that point to an outsider to be progress in the case. The interview is Ramsey’s first national TV appearance since prosecutors cleared his family in July. Ramsey’s wife, Patsy, died of cancer in 2006.
The episode included an interview with Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in 2002 from her Utah home and held captive nine months. There was also a segment on Missouri kidnapping victim Shawn Hornbeck, who was missing more than four years when he was returned to his family in 2007.

Miracle at St. Anna

Film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 7
Blanchard performing an outdoor concert at the festival on Monday, September 8

Toronto, Sept. 4, 2008 – (Hollywood, CA) World-renowned film composer and trumpet player Terence Blanchard has reunited with director Spike Lee to score “Miracle at St. Anna,” which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 7th at 9:00pm in the Visa Screening Room. There will be a second showing of the film on Tuesday, September 9th at 11:00am in the Visa Screening Room (Film opens nationally on September 26). Blanchard will be performing an “outdoor concert” sponsored by the festival on Monday, September 8th at 8:30pm at Yonge-Dundas Square. “Miracle at St. Anna” marks the Golden-Globe nominated composer’s 43rd film score and 12th collaboration with Lee. Miracle at St. Anna is part of the Special Presentations at the festival.

“Miracle at St. Anna” is based on author James McBride’s critically-acclaimed, NY Times bestseller and World War II novel of the same name. Featuring over 140 minutes of music and 42 separate cues, the score for “Miracle at St. Anna” was recorded at Sony Studios in Los Angeles with a 98-piece orchestra as well as members of Terence’s band.

With a cast that includes Michael Ealy, John Turturro, John Leguizamo, and Walton Scoggins, “Miracle at St. Anna” depicts the lives of four African-American soldiers fighting in World War II (1944) who are trapped in an Italian village. The film is set in Tuscany and follows the 92nd Buffalo Soldier Division as the soldiers find themselves trapped behind enemy lines and separated from their unit. What happens within the confines of the town, the stories of love and loss and the incredible passion with which these soldiers live out their daily lives is nothing less than physically and emotionally extraordinary. “Miracle at St. Anna” is presented by Touchstone Pictures in association with On My Own and Rai Cinema.

Says Blanchard of Miracle, “I’m inspired by the story itself.” Growing-up in New Orleans, I remember the Buffalo Soldiers marching in parades and never realized the significant role they played in fighting for our freedom. It’s an honor to be a part of a project that helps to relive and tell a small segment of what those soldiers dealt with in our history.”

What’s a MythBuster?

Discovery.com MythBusters

So. You’re minding your own business, filling up your gas tank, when your cell phone rings. Hmmm. Should you answer it? Because you’ve heard you shouldn’t use cell phones near gas stations since they can produce small sparks that can ignite big fires.
But wait. Could that actually be true?
Sounds like a job for MythBusters!
It’s a tough job separating truth from urban legend, but the MythBusters are here to serve. Each week special-effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman take on three myths and use modern-day science to show you what’s real and what’s fiction.
That’s right, they do more than explain how something may or may not be scientifically possible. Through trial and error they actually demonstrate it.
