Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal on Thursday announced that all the sacked staffers would be reinstated. He, however, declined to commit
himself on a revision of salaries although reports suggested that the staff might have to take a pay cut.

He denied that the volte-face was due to any political pressure. “I swear on my dead mother that I have not spoken to any politician.” He said it was purely a personal decision, taken “as the father of the family’ ‘ after he had seen “the tears of all the employees”.

Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors jailed – Sex on Dubai beach

Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors jailed : Sex on Dubai beach

A British couple was sentenced to three months in jail Thursday in a case that has caused controversy in this Gulf boom town because the two were charged with having sex on the beach.

The judge did not provide any details about his verdict as is customary in Dubai, so it is unclear whether Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors were found guilty of engaging in intercourse, or some lesser offense.

The two Britons, who are both in their 30s and met at an all-you-can-drink champagne brunch before the alleged incident occurred, were arrested in July and later charged with sex outside of marriage, public indecency and drunkenness.

In addition to the three month jail sentence, Judge Hamdi Mustafa Abu el-Khair levied the equivalent of about a $270 fine against each of the defendants and ordered them to be deported from Dubai after serving their prison time.

A Florida grand jury was hearing evidence Tuesday about homicide charges against the mother of missing Orlando toddler Caylee Anthony.

The child’s paternal grandfather was subpoenaed to testify about the odor of human decomposition coming from his daughter Casey Anthony’s white Pontiac, according to MyFOXOrlando.com.

“This is going to be very hard for me to do,” an emotional George Anthony said outside the Orange County Courthouse before going in. “My focus is on my granddaughter — it always has been … Just pray for her. That’s all I’m asking for.”

Casey Anthony, 22, is a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance.

Operation Baghdad Pups

Operation Baghdad Pups

MEET Ratchet, the puppy saved by US soldiers from a burning pile of rubbish in Iraq.

Now the little dog that nobody wanted is stealing the hearts of Americans, with more than 10,000 people signing an online petition pleading with the US Army to let him come home with one of the soldiers who saved him.

Sergeant Gwen Beberg fears Ratchet will be killed if he is left behind.

“I just want my puppy home,” Sgt Beberg wrote to her mother in the US in an email from Iraq this week, soon after she was separated from the dog after a transfer.

“I miss my dog horribly,” Sgt Beberg, who is scheduled to return to the US next month, wrote.

The puppy’s defenders are ratcheting up their efforts to save him. Yesterday, the program coordinator for Operation Baghdad Pups, which is run by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International, left for Iraq to try to get the dog to the US.

Last week, Sgt Beberg’s congressman, Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, wrote to the US Army urging it to review the case. Sgt Beberg and another soldier rescued the puppy from a burning pile of rubbish in May.

Connecticut Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage

The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making the New England state the third after Massachusetts and California to allow marriage rights equal to those of heterosexual couples.

In a decision issued today, the Hartford-based court said eight gay and lesbian couples were improperly denied marriage licenses in the town of Madison. The suit was brought in 2004 by Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, a Boston-based legal group.

“The statutory scheme impermissibly discriminates against gay persons on account of their sexual orientation,” Justice Richard Palmer wrote in the decision, reversing a lower court.

USS Grunion SS 216

The Navy has confirmed the wreckage of a sunken vessel found last year off the Aleutians Islands is that of the USS Grunion, which disappeared during World War II.

Underwater video footage and pictures captured by an expedition hired by sons of the commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Mannert L. Abele, allowed the Navy to confirm the discovery, Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny said Thursday in a news release.

McAneny said the Navy was very grateful to the Abele family.

“We hope this announcement will help to give closure to the families of the 70 crewmen of Grunion,” he said.

The Grunion was last heard from July 30, 1942. The submarine reported heavy anti-submarine activity at the entrance to Kiska, and that it had 10 torpedoes remaining forward. On the same day, the Grunion was directed to return to Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base. The submarine was reported lost Aug. 16, 194
